Learning Outcomes

  • All 3D graphics systems draw objects using triangles
  • Triangles are drawn using points in 3D space
  • Triangles can be painted using "texture map" images
  • Shading requires direction vectors called "normals"
  • Triangles and "texture map" images can have transparency
  • Lines can be used to highlight edges in 3D models
  • Mirroring draws the opposite side of a symmetrical surface
  • Reflections also require direction vectors called "normals"

  • Introduction

    There is simply no concept of what 3D graphics is, even for professionals who use 3D software on a daily basis. This is because software tools often talk about objects as the core elements. These tools construct the 3D graphics under the covers.

    What we offer is fundamental 3D graphics from the ground up. That is, we introduce what your PC, PlayStation, iPhone and XBox does to draw 3D graphics.

    A simple example is a Cube object. Software tools show you a Cube but in its simplest form a Cube is made from 8 points in 3D space and 12 triangles. There is no such thing as a square or 4 point surface in 3D graphics. This is because ALL 3D graphics is made using triangles as the core element. This is the first learning outcome and probably the single most important knowledge you can teach.

    Students that learn these fundamentals gain a clear and simple understanding of what drives their graphics, delivering a solid footing for careers in 3D, multimedia, animation and software development.

    Session 1 - Build a 3D Model Kit

    Play a game... build one of our 3D model kits.

    The default difficulty is "Easy" which uses one axis only for construction. This makes the build time fast and friendly. Save your kit when you finish building it.

    Session 2 - Build a 3D Model Kit using Hard Difficulty

    Start a new game with "Hard Difficulty". Here is the where to find it:

    This uses all 3 axis for construction and develops a practical understanding of the Cartesian coordinate system.

    Build and complete the 3D model kit... this will unlock all of the Display Effects. Save your kit when you finish building it.

    Session 3 - Discuss Points, Triangles, Lines and Paint

    Load the kit you saved using "Hard Difficulty". This will display the completed 3D model kit and show the Display Effects.

    Read 3D Anatomy 101 Points page and use 3D Kit Builder activities to show Points on the 3D model kit. Rotate and examine the 3D model.

    Read 3D Anatomy 101 Triangles page and use 3D Kit Builder activities to show Triangles on the 3D model kit. Rotate and examine the 3D model.

    Read 3D Anatomy 101 Lines page and use 3D Kit Builder activities to show Lines on the 3D model kit. Rotate and examine the 3D model.

    Read 3D Anatomy 101 Paint page and use 3D Kit Builder activities to show Paint on the 3D model kit. Rotate and examine the 3D model.

    Session 4 - Paint your 3D model kit

    Load the kit you saved and use the Paint options to paint the 3D model kit using your own designs.

    When painting you will find there are also Bonus paint images you may use to color your 3D model kit. When the Paint Window opens press the green button and click on "Bonus".

    Advanced students may wish to create their own "Custom" texture map images. Refer to the 3D Kit Builder Help Guide for the requirements to achieve this as there are several limitations.

    Session 5 - Discuss Lighting and Transparency

    Consider your audience before moving on. The content up to now is suitable for young children... whereas the following content may be considered more suitable for 8 years of age and over.

    Load the kit you saved using "Hard Difficulty". This will display the completed 3D model kit and show the Display Effects.

    Read 3D Anatomy 101 Lighting page and use 3D Kit Builder activities to show Lighting Normals on the 3D model kit. Rotate and examine the 3D model.

    Read 3D Anatomy 101 Transparency page and use 3D Kit Builder activities to turn Transparency on and off for the 3D model kit. Rotate and examine the 3D model.

    Session 6 - Discuss Mirroring and Reflections

    Load the kit you saved using "Hard Difficulty". This will display the completed 3D model kit and show the Display Effects.

    Read 3D Anatomy 101 Mirroring page and use 3D Kit Builder activities to turn Mirroring on and off for the 3D model kit. Rotate and examine the 3D model.

    Read 3D Anatomy 101 Reflections page and use 3D Kit Builder activities to turn Reflections on and off for the 3D model kit. Rotate and examine the 3D model.
